Kinross sits on the western shore of Loch Leven, a big shallow loch known for its trout and its birdlife. Out on an island stands Loch Leven Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in 1567 and forced to abdicate before her escape the following spring; a small ferry runs out to it from Kinross in summer. A heritage trail follows the lochside, and there’s an RSPB reserve worth a look too.
