Places to explore in North LanarkshireScotland · Central Scotland
Once a landscape of coal and steel, North Lanarkshire keeps its older marks too. The Romans ran the Antonine Wall across its northern edge, and the ditch and rampart still climb steeply over Croy Hill. A Roman fort and bath house lie buried at Bothwellhaugh, now beneath the loch and grassland of Strathclyde Country Park, the county's great open space. Royalist forces under Montrose routed the Covenanters at the Battle of Kilsyth in 1645, one of the bloodiest days of the civil war in Scotland.
