Time a visit for a Sunday in May and Boconnoc’s 20 acres of gardens are at their best, rhododendrons and camellias massing around a Georgian house and a 14th-century church deep in wooded parkland near Lostwithiel. The rest of the year it’s a private estate, let out for weddings and corporate events, though pre-booked group tours of the house, church and garden can sometimes be arranged. There’s no regular season, so check before travelling.
