By 2016 the outdoor pool in New Cumnock, first opened in June 1968, was facing permanent closure. The foundation of the then Prince of Wales, now The King’s Foundation, which is based at nearby Dumfries House, stepped in with a £4 million refurbishment of the pool and the town hall. The prince reopened the pool in June 2017, and the foundation still runs it. New Cumnock’s pool is the only public heated outdoor freshwater pool in Scotland, kept at about 30°C, and more than 30,000 people swim there each year. The season runs from spring into autumn, and booking ahead is recommended. New Cumnock station is about 600m north.
