Helmsdale is a planned fishing village at the mouth of its river, with a tidy harbour and the Timespan museum covering local history. Its odd claim to fame is gold: the Kildonan gold rush of 1869 brought prospectors up the strath behind the village, and you can still pan for flecks of it in the Kildonan burns today. It’s on the A9 and the Far North Line.
