The highest of the Fannaichs, a rolling group of Munros between Garve and Ullapool in the north-west Highlands

The Fannaichs are a rolling group of hills south of Loch Broom, and Sgurr Mor is the highest of them. At 1,109m it stands well clear of everything around it — a Munro (a Scottish hill above 3,000 feet) with a full 914m of drop to the passes at its foot, so it reads as the biggest thing for miles. The name means, plainly, big peak. Walkers usually take in several of its neighbours on one long circuit, Sgurr nan Clach Geala among them, starting from the road to the north; there’s no quick way up, and the Fannaichs are a genuine day out well away from the tarmac.
