Tresco Abbey Garden is a subtropical garden built into the ruins of St Nicholas’ Priory, a Benedictine house on this Isles of Scilly island, started in 1834 by Augustus Smith and now home to around 2,000 exotic plant species that wouldn’t survive most of mainland Britain. Free-roaming red squirrels and golden pheasants wander the paths, and the Valhalla collection of salvaged ship figureheads is worth the detour. It’s open daily through the main season, with an admission charge, and reached only by boat or helicopter from Penzance.
